Mateo is a little boy who loves all things space, and who wants to do absolutely nothing without his best friend, Cosmo, who might just be a Tortoise. However, Beyond the Shell is not about Mateo, but about Cosmo’s dreams to go to outer space and see all the things Mateo shows him in his books, movies, and video games. Cosmo longs for an epic adventure outside of his terrarium, and an epic adventure is just what he gets when Henry, a tentacled alien kidnaps him in the middle of the night. Henry’s mission is to return Cosmo to their home planet where he is thought to be the heir to their King. Only things don’t quite go as Cosmo had imaged, and one shouldn’t make assumptions based on appearances. The question at the end of the night is whether or not Cosmo can make it back to his own home planet, his cozy terrarium, and more fun days spent playing with Mateo.
